the fourwinds outtakes

steph swainston is one of a handful of authors taking the fantasy trope, along with china mieville and jeff vandermeer, in a new direction. i enjoyed the first of her Fourwinds books and discovered the other day on her web site that she has some outtakes that did not make it into the series. this is a pamphlet stitch binding disguised as a western codex. upholstery fabric was fused to tissue paper and glued to book boards. paper is a handmade indian rag stock. i wanted to simulate something printed during the Elizabethan period which guided font and size choices i made. i have not done many hardcover type bindings so far but i am pleased with the result
